#fiveways to Set an #Intention for the #NewYear

When it comes to New Year, we all have things that we want to change or go out there and do.

It’s almost as if we’ve been given a blank canvas to do whatever we want and there’s something refreshing about seeing those 1’s on the calendar.

But there’s also something special about this New Year as it marks the start of a New Decade.

We’ve got the Olympics to look forward to in Tokyo and that’s a pretty exciting thing.

And we all will have things on the horizon that we are looking forward to.

For us, today is always a day to simply set back and refocus. Revisit things. Reflect on the past year and put pen to paper for the new one ahead.

But one of the most important things we like to do, regardless of whether you believe in resolutions or goals, plans or ideas.

Set an Intention.

Deepak Chopra is quoted as saying that “intentions are the starting point of every dream—the seed of creation.”

To break it down a little more, intentions are simple statements of what you desire, as well as what and who you intend to be each and every day. Something that you want to DO more of.

It’s a simple thing to do but it really does make a difference.

It reminds you each day of how you’d like to show up.

How you’d like to approach things.

And maybe even something that might have been missing in the year just gone by.

So today, we thought that we would share 5 simple tips to help you set your intention for 2020.

Keep It Simple

The more complicated you make things, the less likely it is that you’re going to go out and do them because they’re gonna stop you in your tracks before you even start. Rather than setting yourselves loads of challenging goals, just keep it simple. Your intention is about HOW you show up rather than what you DO. So simple enough to keep it to a basic statement like “This year I am going to have more . . . .” or “This year, I will . . . . .”

Revisit

There’s 2 ways to approach this. Take a look at the challenges you’ve been through and see what you’ve learned from them or look at the things that you have enjoyed doing and identify why. Maybe those lessons that you have learned can be what you put forward and possibly, some of those things that you have enjoyed – well, maybe you need to do a little more of that !

One Word

Now that you’ve decided to keep it simple and have revisited the last year, what’s one or two key words that you have identified. Maybe you learned that you had more strength than you thought or that it was about boundaries. Or maybe you enjoyed spending time with people you care about. It could even be that there was something you felt was missing from the last year like laughter or fun or adventure. Whatever it is, keep it to one or two words.

Stretch

Your intentions should always, in our view, be something that push you forward a little bit. They should take you out of your comfort zone. BUT ! They shouldn’t make you uncomfortable and they definitely shouldn’t be something you struggle with either. If you do want to choose something big and bold, break it down into bit sized chunks – kind of like training for a marathon or learning a new skill. Look for ways that you can slowly implement this into your daily routine.

Think and Notice

Your intention should make you a little bit excited when you think about it. They should give you energy and inspiration. So take a look at what you have written down and see what it feels like to you when you think about showing up that way each day. And then, write your statement down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere you can see every day. This will keep you focused and on track when things get in the way.
